As the benefits of performance measurement and management become broadly known, more and more organizations have implemented frameworks that includes more than the traditional lagging measures of their financial and operational performance. But squeezing a great deal of information into a small amount of space and also designing it to result in a visual display that is easily and immediately understandable by the viewer can prove to be very challenging.
Designing an individual graph may prove difficult to a certain extent. The degree of difficulty increases considerably when faced with the challenge of designing a dashboard. This is because a dashboard combines a large collection of information, often dissimilar, which can easily become cluttered.
The public sector has recently started to show an increased interest in being more transparent and making different institutions’ performance results available to citizens. “Making this information publicly available goes a long way towards helping our citizens understand how we manage the Borough and how we provide services”, says Borough of Franklin Lakes Administrator, Gregory C. Hart.
More and more, organizations are increasing the focus on the environment, in the idea of reducing their footprint and protecting the climate. A team from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture has designed a dashboard to monitor how much energy employees use at work.
The San Diego Regional Quality of Life Dashboard was initiated in 2009 by the Equinox Center, an independent, not profit research and policy center that helps the San Diego region achieve a more prosperous economy and improve the quality of life of its residents.
