During the first session at the HR Summit and Expo 2012 in Dubai, Dave Ulrich gave some practical examples of the outside-in approach to staffing, learning and development, performance management, communication, leadership, and culture.
Some of the key examples were:
- For staffing: invite customers to sit in candidate interviews and provide relevant feedback, especially for customer-facing roles;
- For learning and development: have a panel of customers present in an internal training; invite key suppliers/customers/investors to relevant company-sponsored trainings;
- For performance management: 720° feedback, including sources outside the company; take examples of individual performance plans to customers and ask “if our employee does these, will it help you?”.
